Abstract
Summary form only given. Mechanism of polymerization and redox switching of poly thiophene have been studied by in situ spectroelectrochemical techniques. The determining role of the deprotonation of the intermediate cation during the polymerization has been deduced from the effect of protophilic additives. Spectroscopic evidence has been found to support the assumption of a dissociative reoxidation of the dianion during the undoping of the cathodically doped polymeric film.
