  • Abstract
    The intent of this paper is to inspire the utility industry´s forward thinking by revisiting past accomplishments and examining today´s technologies to definitively define a smart grid. The author proposes that a substantial foundation for the future Smart Grid has been established throughout his utility´s long history and visionary efforts, which have forged its smart grid strategy based on five key smart grid themes. Southern California Edison´s five keys to a successful Smart Grid - renewable, distributed energy resources and storage integration, grid control and asset optimization, workforce effectiveness, smart metering, and energy smart customer solutions - have been evolving for decades and will guide smart grid advancements efforts well into the future.
