Abstract
In this paper we describe Ecoisland, a smart grid system that integrates an electrolyzer-based refueler (ER) with renewable energy sources and in which ER acts as a demand side management load. The hydrogen refueler and storage system will be used to power a fleet of fuel cell electric vehicles, hence the system converts renewable energy to zero carbon fuels. As a three-year project, the whole system is being developed by a large consortium on the Isle of Wight, UK. As a first-step modeling analysis, this paper discusses a comprehensive simulation model of the Ecoisland system, focusing on several critical system performance metrics. Our simulations have demonstrated the effectiveness of the system under multiple scenarios considering different weather conditions and levels of demand.
