The interconnection of local area networks using ATM over satellite

This paper details the work undertaken at the University of Salford in both the design and development of an interface subsystem for attaching either CSMA/CD or FDDI LANs onto the ATM based satellite service. An in depth investigation into the design of both the hardware and software of this subsystem is presented together with actual performance results obtained from the demonstrator trials using Catalyst to interconnect remote networks located in Nanterre (France), Aveiro (Portugal) and Basel (Switzerland).
