Abstract
Vestibular maculas are discussed as prototypic neuronal networks that have many of the attributes of more advanced systems. Their basic organization is characterized by highly channeled and distributed modifying circuits that are integrated through feedforward-feedback loops. This architecture is studied by computer simulations that are based on morphological data obtained electron microscopically. Results clarify the function of the distributed modifying circuit in macular information processing. It is suggested that similar dual circuitry be implemented in artificial neural networks and computer design
