Abstract
The authors survey the literature on permanent magnet (PM) motors and drives and include line-start as well as inverter-fed applications and designs. The literature on inverter-fed applications and designs is divided into two parts: studies that deal with drives that use discrete feedback every 60 degrees (electrical) for a three-phase machine, and studies that deal with drives that use continuous feedback. In the former, the ideal machine back EMF is trapezoidal; in the latter, it is sinusoidal. The literature on brushless DC motors is also surveyed.<>
