Abstract
The UMTS Task Force was created in February 1995 following the workshop “Towards 3rd-Generation Mobile Communications Systems” held in Brussels. The initiative for the workshop and recognition that Europe needed to focus the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System activities came from the European Commission´s RACE Mobile projects. The nineteen strong Task Force membership was drawn from all quarters of the European digital mobile industry and each member had experience of 2nd-generation digital systems with participation in the work on UMTS. The key conclusion of their final report was that a UMTS Forum, open to all active participants in the European mobile industry, should be created to steer the general technical, regulatory, licensing and operational development of UMTS. The author presents a summary of the UMTS Task Force report
