The concepts of UNIX are examined in order to give the reader an appreciation of the capabilities of the UNIX operating system. The benefits of UNIX consist of productivity, scalability, and portability. The UNIX system is the core of numerous emerging computer-aided software engineering (CASE) packages. All of the programming environment benefits of UNIX result in lower costs to the end user, whether he/she is buying software solutions or writing his/her own applications. Issues facing UNIX in the 1990s are also considered
