Abstract :
Since long time, the relational row oriented databases are most often used for Data warehouse implementation because it is more efficient in the database which contains large number of short on-line transactions (INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE) in OLTP (Online Transaction Processing). The functionality of OLTP is to utilize very fast query processing, maintaining data integrity in multi-access environments and an effectiveness measured by number of transactions per second. It contains detailed and current data to control and run fundamental business tasks. But their Record Based structure can not satisfy the existing needs of the user. As the size of data grows day by day, user demand more sophisticated analytical capabilities. For large amount of data RDBMS data warehouse systems are difficult to design and maintain, inefficient in their use of disk space and I/O. Designers require to compromise between optimizing query performance and maximizing query flexibility. Columnar databases use less disk space and are more efficient in their I/O demands than records-based data warehouses but force their own compromise between optimizing for new record insertion versus data selection and retrieval. The current paper gives an idea about advantages and disadvantages of Row and Column Oriented Database concepts. The paper refers study of different researchers to come to the conclusion.
