Abstract :
Approximately 40 million people worldwide have epilepsy [3]. Due to the unpredictable and sporadic nature of seizures which characterize epilepsy, it is nearly impossible to prepare for a seizure prior to its occurrence. Even a minor seizure (Petit Mal Seizure) can possibly lead to injury or death. If a seizure is predicted, safety measures can be taken to ensure the wellbeing of the patient as well as others. Thus, developing reliable methods and devices for ambulatory prediction of the onset of a seizure is of major clinical importance. The authors device has an ability to alert a patient of an oncoming seizure after a preseizure parameter is observed such that the patient (and/or clinicians and paramedics) may take the proper precautions. This unique nature of the device assists epileptic patients to secure themselves before the seizure so that they can avoid any fatal accidents. Usage of this device in epileptic patients everyday lives can help in reducing their psychological stress and improving their social lives.
