Abstract
For years to come, the service quality of a cellular radio system will continue to be dependent on the integrity of its access network. As a network evolves, the challenge is to deploy more base sites in order to provide near ubiquitous coverage and to accommodate a high traffic density but at the same time ensuring the carrier-to-interference ratio remains acceptable with a finite amount of spectrum allocation. With this large number of base sites, we need to interconnect them back to their switch sites economically and efficiently but without compromising on resilience and capacity. To meet these challenges, better efficiency for the radio link has be achieved through the introduction of automated planning tools and adaptive system features, while improvement on the transmission network performance can be attained by the flexible use of transmission media and network topologies
