Abstract
In order to customize the measurement procedure operating on personal digital assistant (PDA), the innovative design criterion of the virtual instrument (VI) is pointed out. It is based on the carrying out of self containing modules obtained by splitting up the traditional IT in several functional entities, according with the characteristics of the measurement instrument (MI). The selection among these modules allows to the user the customized configuration of the measurement procedure on PDA. This new scenario increases the characteristics of adaptability of the activities performed by the wireless distributed measurement system (W-DMS). As a consequence, the management policy has fundamental impact on the correct and safety management of the W-DMS. Indeed, the management policy must ensure both the efficiency and the safety of the working operations of the MI. In order to evidence the innovative features, an applicative example is shown by referring to the use of the PDA in the W- DMS operating in the laboratory for the synthesis and characterization of material for industrial application of the University of Calabria.
