Abstract
The authors develop an equivalent PSPICE loss-model for a static VAr compensator (SVC) so that the various loss centers can be investigated. A complete loss model of a SVC including all nonlinear and frequency-dependent components is presented. This model is verified by measurements on a 3×380 V/30 A SVC. A comparison is drawn between the losses in the various magnetic components of the compensator. The possibility of partial compensation of losses caused by harmonic components by modification of the control strategy is investigated. Since SVCs are usually built for very large powers, reduction of the losses by a small percentage may also be advantageous
