Using a smart filter, the performance of the decision-directed maximum-likelihood (ML) feedback (FB) carrier phase error synchronization loop is optimized. Substantial improvement in the bit error rate (BER) performance, short acquisition time, and approximately jitter free tracking are the salient features of the optimized loop
