Abstract
It is shown that rapid solidification is a simple and widely applicable method to change refractive-index locally in various glass fibers. The index reduction caused by arc discharge in glass fibers is estimated at more than 0.006. Long-period gratings are written in a standard telecommunication fiber, and are not degraded by heating at 700°C for 2 hours. Resonance wavelengths can be adjusted by heating.
