Abstract
In view of the physical and logical separation of medical image generation, retrieval, processing, and storage, a distributed design approach for picture archiving and communication system (PACS) database systems develops naturally and has many advantages over its centralized counterpart. An examination is made of the design requirements for a PACS database system and the design issues of a distributed PACS database system. An architecture of a distributed PACS data base is proposed, and some implementation considerations are discussed
