Abstract :
Non-coherent receivers have become promising candidates for low-complexity and low-power Ultra Wide Band (UWB) systems. However, a Non-Coherent Combining Loss (NCCL) is evident in the traditional non-coherent receivers that mainly rely on analog implementations, especially when multiple access techniques are employed. This paper proposes a new Digital Code Matched Filter (DCMF)-based non-coherent receiver for a low data rate Time-Hopping Pulse Position Modulation (TH-PPM) UWB system. The DCMF follows after an Analog-to-Digital Convertor (ADC) and is applied before the non-coherent processing. It is matched to the user-specific sequence and reduces the NC-CL. We analyze the performance of the proposed receiver using both full-resolution ADC and one-bit ADC in the presence of Multi-User Interference (MUI) and compare it to the traditional receiver. Analytical bit error rate expressions are also developed and validated for the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) case.
