Abstract :
The fibre distributed data interface (FDDI) is widely recognised as one of the most promising solutions to the problem of high speed interconnection in the near term and on the local area basis. The evolution towards the interconnection of the broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) requires that the backbone ring be connected via an interface to asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks of the B-ISDN. The interface is responsible for all information transfer between the users or local area networks (LANs) connected to the FDDI and the ATM networks and, thus forms part of the user network interface (UNI). Previous system designs have not considered the interface between the FDDI-based metropolitan area network (MAN) and the B-ISDN
