  • Abstract
Grading rubrics are an assessment mechanism that helps instructors and students focus attention on the important aspects of an assignment. A rubric also makes your grading easier and more consistent. There are many rubrics available for generic activities, such as, making a presentation, or writing a report. For a rubric to provide the most benefits for student learning and the instructorpsilas teaching, the instructor should create it specifically for the course assignment. This workshop covers several topics on rubrics: the elements of a rubric, methods to design rubrics with and without student involvement, and how to apply them within your courses. In the first part of the workshop, the discussion of rubrics will be interspersed with attendees working in small groups to collaboratively create a rubric. Additional discussion will describe how to apply rubrics for grading and accreditation assessment purposes. Finally in the remaining time, each participant, or group of colleagues, can begin to develop a rubric for a specific course assignment.
