Abstract :
This paper deals with survivability issues in high-speed optical networks. The authors propose an ant colony-based mechanism as substitution in a phase of an algorithm, which employs an integrated self-healing technique. The benefits as well as the influence of the proposed modification in the design of the self-healing rings and the spare channel assignment are analytically examined over different integration levels. The derived results outline that the proposed ant colony-based modification provides a reduced amount of spare capacity at the same levels of integration, when applied in the integrated self-healing scheme
