Abstract :
The paper addresses the problem of designing a “virtual error free channel” for communication over unreliable (cellular) packet radio channels using hybrid error control schemes. For hybrid error control to be effective it is essential that an optimal mix of forward error correction and automatic repeat requests be used. Further, the design of hybrid error control schemes depends critically on the application (for example, its traffic characteristics and quality of service it demands). We discuss data transfer and packet voice applications. Optimal design methodologies for performance metrics and applications of interest are developed. In addition, several numerical examples are presented
