Abstract
The design and testing of several metamaterials (MTMs) that exhibit double negative (DNG) medium properties at X-band frequencies are reported. Double negative media are materials in which the permittivity and permeability are both negative. Simulation and experimental results are given that demonstrate the realization of DNG metamaterials matched to free-space. The extraction of the effective permittivity and permeability for these DNG metamaterials from reflection and transmission data is treated. It is shown conclusively that the metamaterials treated exhibit DNG properties in the frequency range of interest. The designed MTMs consist of combinations of capacitively loaded strip (CLS) and split ring resonator (SRR) inclusions in a background dielectric substrate. Applications for DNG media are in the fields of sensor and energy transmission technologies.
