Abstract
Wideband wireless systems have recently been acquiring a great importance, as the need for the multimedia communications is being increased rapidly. The application of the self-complementary structure (SCS) to an antenna system is considered to be highly promising for wideband or multiband wireless systems. An analysis of monopole antenna systems having SCS is presented. The antenna systems are composed of a monopole and a slot as the complementary element. Fairly wideband characteristics are observed for these antenna systems, although they have imperfect SCS. It is the first time that the efficiency of SCA (self-complementary antenna) has been evaluated; the bandwidth is also discussed with consideration to efficiency. The results suggest that this type of antenna may have a great potential for wideband wireless systems and also systems where small antennas are required. There are still many problems, such as the selection of optimum antenna parameters, dimensions, etc., to be solved for practical applications.
