Abstract :
It is shown that digital or smart transmitters can be multiplexed for both process control and maintenance operations. This can be accomplished with transmitters in either digital or simultaneous digital and analog mode. The transmitters can be integrated into an existing DCS (distributed control system) or other operator interfaces, such as a PC. The transmitters are wired to multiplexers throughout the plant. The multiplexer can be used to support a transmitter management terminal for maintenance use, independently of operations, as well as to provide the digital data to the DCS. The maintenance savings alone can in some instances justify the use of smart transmitters. Combined process and maintenance advantages can improve product quality and quantity and overall plant efficiency by reducing maintenance costs
