The power converters of the CERN LEP accelerator

The power converters for the LEP (Large Electron Positron) accelerator have to meet not only strict performance requirements but also reliability and repairability criteria compatible with accelerator and storage ring operation. The preparation phase of the power converter project, which comprised collaboration with universities and specialized industry, is discussed. This is followed by a round of preliminary inquiries. The philosophy of the specification writing is also reported. This careful preparation of the project together with a competent and devoted team made it possible to bring to a successful end all the contracts within the tight budget and time constraints imposed by the LEP project management
