Abstract :
Summary form only given. The physics objectives of the Phase I D-T operation of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) scheduled to begin in September of 1993, upon successful completion of the preparatory tasks, are production of 5 MW of fusion power, measurement of tritium transport, measurement of escaping alpha particles, and testing of the diagnostics for confined alpha particles. The technical objectives for Phase I include evaluation of diagnostic performance in a high flux of 14 MeV neutrons, evaluation of tritium retention in the vessel, and demonstration of the completed tritium handling system. Research objectives during Phase II tritium operation include the study of confinement and heating of D-T plasmas, maximizing the fusion power, study of any alpha collective instabilities, study of energic alpha-particle transport and evaluation of RF-heated D-T plasmas, During Phase II, a tritium purification system will be commissioned and the goal is to perform about 20 high-concentration tritium shots each operational week.
