Abstract
Summary form only given. Models for the design of MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) channels, for the analysis of MHD experiments or as diagnostic tools, and for numerical experiments are studied. The procedure for the design of an MHD channel is based on the solution of an optimization problem. This gives the optimal design parameters such as plasma inlet conditions, and loading and channel geometry, which fit design requirements and technological constraints. As tools for the analysis of MHD channel flows, multidimensional and time-dependent models have been developed. In order to study the behavior of the nonuniform structure of the plasma during its residence time in the channel, a 2-D time-dependent model is utilized. A code of this type is adopted for numerical experiments on MHD power generation with plasma nonuniformities.
