Abstract
Preventing a black grid: the presentation will mention the long interest of the DTI and its predecessors in power system protection, using examples from the past, including the first major blackout in London. The presentation will introduce references to contemporary overseas events, describing the impact of major disturbances and the relative influence of protection schemes. Concluding comments will draw attention to a major protection scheme of national importance, and remark on work in progress in Great Britain.
