Abstract :
Summary form only given. A modeling effort is currently under way at Los Alamos to predict the efficiency of a 1.4-MW CW (continuous-wave) magnicon at 700 MHz. The effort includes a small-signal analysis of the input structure and a three-dimensional computer simulation of the entire device. The magnicon parameters are a beam voltage of 170 kV and a beam current of 18 A. These parameters produce a beam of higher perveance than previously developed in the Soviet Union. The goal of the modeling effort is to determine whether the high-perveance beam, which is desirable for a CW device, is compatible with high-efficiency operation.
