Abstract
The author summarizes the Workshop on Automating Software Design, held August 25, 1988, at the annual conference of the America Association for Artificial Intelligence. Sixty researchers from North America, Europe, and Japan met to discuss recent advances in knowledge-based software engineering. The interests of participants ranged from using AI techniques for managing large software projects to automatic programming.<>
