  • Abstract
The AM29000 is shown to have a set of enhanced features making it suitable as the basic processor for designing powerful communication computers. This type of computers is designated the microprogram extended reduced-instruction-set computer (MERISC). With MERISC it is possible to design a computer whose basic processing elements can evolve as the silicon process evolves, has the advantages associated with monolithic microprocessors yet remains flexible enough to be application-specific. With the MERISC approach, existing designs can be migrated to this processing platform without software impact.<>
