Abstract
This paper proposes a multi-dimensional modulation (MDM) technique that achieves better performance than conventional orthogonal modulation without any diversity or coding gain. The key to improving upon the performance of orthogonal modulation is to efficiently exploit the additional degrees of freedom offered by higher dimensional Euclidean space in the constellation design. Analytical results are obtained for the exact symbol and bit error performance of the MDM design over flat and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Through simulation, we compare the error performance of the MDM scheme with conventional orthogonal modulation, namely frequency-shift keying.
