Abstract :
The apparent similarity of optimal power flow (OPF) and conventional power flow (e.g. familiar busbar data and circuit flow output) is an illusion that may lure a new user into using OPF unprepared without realising the real implications of the OPF analysis being undertaken. This paper discusses the challenges of using an OPF program from the perspective of a new user. It points out the potential benefits of applying an OPF to the operation and planning of a power system. The difficulties and burdens that an OPF places on a user are outlined. The pitfalls in using an OPF that a user needs to watch out for are discussed. Some new challenges of applying OPF in the restructured electricity supply industry are considered
