Abstract
The two protocols which will dominate the Internet optical telecommunications backbone in the future are IP, the Internet protocol, and ATM, asynchronous transfer mode. While there is much speculation about which of these two protocols will dominate, it is likely that both will be important, and fill complimentary roles. Both IP and ATM equipment have made a great deal of progress in the total data throughput and port speeds.
