Abstract
Two major advantages of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) are: (i) added capacity when transmitting several wavelengths on the same fiber simultaneously, and (ii) added throughput and flexibility in a network when routing of data is based on the wavelength of the signal. This paper will describe some of the limitations which WDM devices place on optical system and network performance and, conversely, some of the specifications which systems require of WDM devices.
