Abstract :
Summary form only given. Laboratory measurements with computer analysis have been performed for magnetic fields excited by moving, current-carrying conductors in magnetized plasmas. Whistler "wings" are generated for moving electrodynamic tethers and whistler "cones" for magnetic dipoles moving across B/sub O/. While the moving sources carry DC currents they excite AC conduction and eddy currents in the plasma. The role of induced currents in the cross-field closure of tether currents has been addressed. The distortion of antenna radiation patterns due to the relative motion between source and plasma has been shown. These results are not only important for active experiments in space but also for receiving antennas in stream plasmas such as the solar wind.
