Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. Consideration is given to the effect of grouping data into packets for transmission in an error detect-retransmit system: the Chinese Teletex System. Since the error condition of the transmission line does not remain the same during the whole process of transmission, it is not possible to achieve a high throughput with fixed packet size. For the same error condition of the line, the bigger the packet size, the bigger the packet error probability; therefore more packets will have to be retransmitted. A method of dynamically allocating an optimum packet size to obtain a high throughput is presented. This is different from the approach used by R. Lynn Kirlin (1969) and Wesley W. Chu (1974)
