Abstract :
The author details the laboratory testing of electrical conduction in selected refractories used in the construction of electrically boosted glass tank-furnaces. Fused-cast AZS (40% zirconia), a typical electrode block, does conduct to failure under appropriate conditions of temperature and voltage. Bonded AZS (28.5% zirconia) does conduct on a controlled basis. Sillimanite, bonded dense zircon, bonded AZS (21% zirconia), and high resistance fused-cast AZS do not conduct. The author recommends elimination of fused-cast AZS materials from tanks with bottom electrodes and the use of bonded AZS (21% zirconia) or bonded dense zircon in their place. The development of high-resistance fused-cast AZS refractory for the market place is strongly recommended.<>
