Abstract :
Summary form only given. An ion movie camera has been developed to determine the intensity and divergence of intense ion beams generated by magnetically insulated ion diodes on PBFA II (particle beam fusion accelerator II). This diagnostic has been used to measure the focused ion beam parameters on both planar targets irradiated by a sector of a magnetically insulated diode and on cylindrical targets irradiated by the entire diode. The divergence, inferred from planar targets measurements, has been correlated with the enhancement of the ion current density above that expected from classical, single species, Child-Langmuir current using the physical anode-cathode gap. The measurements of the intensity and energy deposition on cylindrical targets are important for the interpretation and scaling of current experiments to inertial confinement fusion conditions.
