Abstract
Among the various video coding techniques, the H.263 algorithm will play a fundamental role for low bit rate services. In this paper we first present the basic concepts of the H.263 video coding procedure and we describe the main characteristics of H.263 Test Model TMN5. In the second part of the paper we propose a simple renewal approach for the performance evaluation of a queueing system loaded with such bit streams. Our model considers the particular structure of H.263 streams and gives accurate results in a well-defined set of the queueing system parameters. The proposed model is validated with simulation results produced using experimental videophone sequences (H.263 test sequences). A performance evaluation study is also presented
