Upgrading the Anglo-Scottish Interconnection: keynote address & project overview

The capacity of the interconnector has been increased from 850 to 1600 MW by the integration of several complimentary developments including the construction of a new overhead line, 125 km long, three new substations, two SVCs, modifications to the excitation at Longannet and Hunterston Power Stations, together with modifications to the AVRs at Peterhead. The author presents the historical background, alternative improvements considered, Environmental Assessment Regulations, construction and operational aspects, with an outline of possible future developments
