Abstract
Two different semiconductor amplifiers are tested and studied. A static characterization in terms of gain is performed, illustrating the dependence with the electric and optical input powers. How semiconductor amplifiers carry out modulation and detection is explained, as well the optimal biased level is discussed. Finally, several designs, where semiconductor optical amplifiers are used as a transceiver at the optical network unit, are proposed.
