Abstract
Three different transmitters to generate optical single sideband signals using the phase shift technique are presented. Return to zero (RZ) coding format is used with different duty cycles to assess the trade-off between back-to-back distortion, due inter-symbol interference, and dispersion tolerance. Optimization of the different transmitters is performed maximizing the dispersion tolerance for a given eye opening penalty. Improvements by a factor of 2 on dispersion tolerance, compared to conventional double sideband non-RZ, are achieved by the transmitters based on electrical processing whereas the transmitter based on an all-optical circuitry presents the highest sideband suppression.
