  • Abstract
We present an upgrade path feasibility study for VDSL based fibre to the curb (FTTC) access networks to fibre to the home (FTTH) infrastructures. This upgrade path is flexible and scalable depending on the specific user requirements. Capacity studies in a triple play deployment scenario have been compared to justify FTTH as the later stage solution for future bandwidth requirements. Network simulations and optical transmission tests have been carried out on both topologies and have demonstrated that the FTTH approach offers extended transmission capabilities in terms of bandwidth and distance as expected but significant infrastructure investment is required. In this respect, VDSL has advantages, as it can provide high speed services with the existing infrastructure of telephone lines, thus being more cost effective in the present access network applications.
