Abstract
Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) have been found to be one of the most attractive solutions to overcome the electrical bottleneck in optical networks. However, the non-linearities of SOA based devices may be harmful to optical modulation formats, especially to the ones that use phase modulation. Based on experimental tests performed at 10 Gb/s we discuss the consequences of SOA based devices on optical single sideband signals. The tested devices were: an amplifier, wavelength converter and a 2R regenerator.
