Abstract :
The frame splitting (FS) for the downlink transmission from a base station (BS) with distributed antennas to a mobile station is studied. A data frame from the BS is split into two portions that are transmitted consecutively from the distributed antennas. For uncoded transmission, the bit error rate (BER) is formulated as a function of the FS ratios, and an analytical optimal FS ratios is derived to achieve the lowest BER over AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, respectively. For coded transmission, an optimal FS ratio is conjectured based the analytical result of uncoded transmission. Furthermore, this optimal FS ratio is verified by simulation. For both uncoded and coded transmissions, the optimal FS ratio depends only on the ratio of the two characteristic SNRs.
