Abstract :
The semiconductor industry is an important part of today´s modern economy. Innovations in this area have both increased the quality of life and created opportunities for millions of people around the world. Microelectronics research is critical for advancing semiconductor technology that will enable the products of tomorrow. Collaboration between industry, education and government in developing new technologies is key to continued advancements in microelectronics. Although there is still a need for increased future funding of university research in the electronics related fields, there are today successful programs at both the local and national level. This presentation will review some of the historical contributions of the semiconductor industry, and how collaborative programs have played a role.
