Abstract
Single material fibers made of low loss material may be superior to cladded or mixed material fibers with respect to optical propagation properties concerned with absorption losses. Thin film fibers with convex surface have self focussing properties similar to those of inhomogeneous fibers with quadratic index profile. By using the method of conformal mapping fundamental characteristics of guided modes in optical films with convex surfaces are found. Transverse fields of guided modes have Hermite Gaussian properties. Spot sizes of guided modes are inversely proportional to square roots of the product of wave constant ¿Ã2 1-Ã2 z and quadratic coefficient of convex surface (l+a)lox. Dispersion characteristics of the guided modes are discussed.
