Abstract
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) already have core network elements in the field using virtualization technology. These network elements are high available, high performance telecommunication devices responsible for the GSM service for millions of people. The virtual machines in these network elements are statically aligned in deployment time. Due to the high capacity and availability requirements these network elements are clusters of several tens of virtual machines. NSN recognized that the management of these virtual machines could be done using private clouds. To prove the feasibility of this concept NSN together with a global telco operator executed a Proof of Concept (PoC) project. This paper presents the results of this project. We describe the core network elements and the properties making these core network elements high available and high capacity. Due to prime constraints we introduced some limitations into the deployment and the setup of the network elements. These limitations are described in section III. The paper describes the exact hardware (HW) and software (SW) stack of the demo, the configuration setup of the demo, and the use cases presented in the demo.
