Abstract :
With multicast applications emerging, such as video conferencing, distance learning and tele-surgery, multicasting is the current research topic in the Internet today. When delivering multicast traffic to end users, a better service may be required to be provided to selected traffic. DiffServ and MPLS are technologies currently used in the Internet to provide quality of service (QoS). In this paper, two multicast traffic merging modes, root-initiated and leaf-initiated, are discussed in a DiffServ-supported MPLS network. Multicast routing protocols such as PIM-SM, PIM-DM and DVMRP are considered. By implementing merging to multicast traffic with different DSCPs, both the number of labels and control messages are reduced in participating MPLS routers.
